Terrorism and Corruption

Even sitting thousands of miles away from my country, I get goosebumps thinking of its future given the recent terror strikes. Thousands of people get killed because of handful of extreme-minded terrorists. Just read a nice article in HT to how to fight terrorism. If the politicians stop taking just 1% of the bribe, then also the steps are not impossible. One day I was thinking if this will ever end.. if the people will ever live in peace. And I thought that it is almost impossible. Modern day terrorism is another form of old days wars fought among kings. The lust for more will never be gone and one country will always try to conquer another. Just that now we call provinces to be countries and the whole situation is also affected by 'globalization'. No longer people(conquerers) think to conquer areas within like hundred of miles. Everything has to be at a larger scale. But one thing is same - plight of common people. How does it matter to people of Kashmir if they are in Pakistan or India or their own country if their life is peaceful?

Though, it is almost impossible to eradicate terrorism, we can definitely fight it. There are just a few steps to make people more aware and build the infrastructure to find bad people. Why can't India have something like SSN (Social Security Number) such that one can have all information about a person through a single ID number. You need to have a SSN to open a bank account, take a loan, get employed, get cell phone, get driver's license, fill tax forms or to do mostly everything. If the govt. has this information for all the citizens, can't it easily find an abrupt activity? I agree its difficult to introduce this in a nation of more than 1 billion people but what are we lacking infrastructure wise to introduce this? Computers - no we have enough, people - no we have too many, Money - yes somewhat, Motivation - yes.. I think the politicians do not want to introduce this as most of the times they are corrupt and do not want all their information available through one ID number.

Most of the answers boil down to the fact that we have corruption in the very roots. Why don't we install security cameras all around? Because, people will steal them in less than a day with the help of local policemen! Until and unless, the corruption in police is not gone.. almost everything is impossible. You shd see this video on youtube - story of a 100 rupees note. Its hilarious and brings out the amount of corruption in everyone's life. Yesterday, one of my friends was saying that they have to bribe people in the administration to get no-dues required for graduation within a day, which otherwise takes at least a week. And do you know the institute? IIT Roorkee... can you believe this? And I guess all profs know about this (his dad is a really good prof). Why can't they do anything? They are the govt. of the Institute. But I guess some of them might as well be involved in the whole cycle of corruption - corruption in our technical fest, fun fest, no-dues and etc. etc. (I am sorry if this hurts any prof of IITR but this is the 'truth' we all students know. Some of them might as well be rumors but I am sure that there is corruption for getting no-dues- at least among the non-teaching staff). May be the profs don't even know about the bribe taking for giving no-dues. Why don't the students tell the authorities? Why can't they come ahead and complain against the spoilers? Because the students are just interested in getting their work done. Right now they are taking money to give no-dues, next day you know they need money to do any damn thing. I am just so sorry to know that one of the top institutes of India has corruption among the staff. I never paid anything to anyone in my four years at IITR. Guess things just change within a yr!

I hope one day everything will be okay... and I am waiting for that day.

Even though things seem bleak now that U know ppl are taking bribes I still think there is hope. I mean I did not pay anything for my no dues and I got it done in a month. I know its not a great situation but if we dont understand that due to bureaucracy things work so slow. Who was the first person to give a bribe? One arrogant lazy idiot with too much money who did not want to wait a week :). I dont blame poor clerks taking bribes. They are there working in a same job for years while the so called "Upper middle class" is jacking up prices for everything by using the surplus money they saved by cutting taxes. Taxes which wud have been a increase in that clerks salary. Things are never simple. And politicians take bribes even in US and Europe and everywhere. The main difference is that the corruption does not enter the common man's life directly. Its easy to stand aside and be moral and give moral advise but its another case when U have to feed 2 kids and pay for their crazy college fees only to see them get bypassed for a job by some "pahonch". The change we all aspire to will never start from the bottom of the economic ladder and nor the top. The top dont want to change and the bottom dont have the power. The change is going to come though the middle. And one more thing. The Change is not going to come through ads and social programs. If there is going to be a change its going to come through a radical action (economic, war or uprising). The night is darkest just before the dawn and the darkness is just started to spread

If you get paid enough, you have social security and your children have good education opportunities , why will you take bribe ?

People are not bad by nature , education or religion in our country they are made bad by circumstances ... most of the time.

You can always twist the right person in the right way to get the right job done
(never really did that :) )

Yah I agree with you but you can never justify corruption talking about corruption near them or inflation. These guys were able to feed their kids or send them to college until last yr. What happened in a yr? This thing is right now just a virus in the system.. you never know when it might infect the whole system.

Just my two cents

1. Corruption and poverty are really not as related as they seem. At the end of the day its character. Though I agree poverty does tend to encourage it but not every poor guy is corrupt and not every rich guy is clean. In fact, I've seen the so-called top 1% cream of India embezzle thousands in tech fests/cult fests.

2. Change needs to be bottom up. There are a bunch of people who spend their lives fighting for an everyday living. If these guys are not thinking about overall good of the society, you can't blame them. But its people with realizations like you and me that can change stuff or if not change atleast try and create awareness. Even for us, giving bribe is an easy way out. It needn't always be like that. There are places where we can prevent it by just a bit of an effort. For example, my roommate in Blr was stopped by a traffic police guy who was asking for money. My roommate took the bike and parked it in the middle of a busy road and told the policeman that he's going to create a scene. The police guy literally got jacked - let him go.

Let's not just blame politicians, change needs to be bottom up.

take any problem in India
dissect its reason and causes
U will end up at this

1) Population
2) Education

unless and until these problems are tackled head on nothing is going to change. And U managed bribe free no-dues does not mean in the same yr everyone else did it ur way. It never suddenly starts

You cannot leave every problem saying that it is because of education and population. Why can't we tackle the problem through multiple ways? Like punishing ppl who take bribe... or atleast complaining against them.. the problem of education and population will go slowly and you cannot actually do anything alone... but for other problems we can start fighting.. right?

so U punish the people who take bribes
they bribe the people who punish them and get away

its not an easy problem to fight I agree and its not easy to fight alone.
I am saying that the change you are waiting for will only come through drastic action and for that we will have to sacrifice a lot.
